Master classes on Chronic Kidney Disease - an educational project of NephroCare Learn

📗 NephroCare Learn is an educational project of master classes, where leading specialists of Ukraine in the field of nephrology and therapy update modern approaches to managing chronic kidney disease, share expert strategies for treating chronic kidney disease.

📗NephroCare Learn is a project that aims to combine the knowledge, learning, and efforts of family doctors and nephrologists, promoting the exchange of experience and the implementation of best practices in the treatment of kidney diseases.

🌏 Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is currently a progressive condition affecting more than 10% of the total world population with a total of more than 800 million patients.

The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that CKD will become the fifth most common chronic disease in 2040.

Data from the Global Burden of Disease study confirm the fact that CKD has become one of the most important causes of global mortality.

The number of patients receiving treatment with methods of renal replacement therapy is growing faster than the population of the world as a whole. Thus, over the past 10 years, the number of patients in the world undergoing dialysis has increased by 70%.

The relevance of the study of chronic kidney disease lies in socio-economic and general medical aspects, since this pathology leads to the invalidation of patients of young, able-bodied age, and is also a burden for the socially vulnerable population - the elderly.

Primary medical care occupies a leading place in the medical provision of the population. Timely diagnosis, the level of morbidity of the population, the duration of temporary disability, the frequency of complications of diseases and the rational use of the bed fund depend significantly on the effectiveness of the work of this link of medical care.

👉 In general, as part of the NephroCare Learn Masterclass Project, there are 4 masterclasses dedicated to the detailed study of all aspects of chronic kidney disease management, starting with diagnosis and ending with renal replacement therapy methods.

Topic: "Chronic kidney disease. Global epidemic of the 21st century"

  • What is chronic kidney disease. Definition of the concept, epidemiology.
  • Classification, criteria for diagnosis.
  • Risk factors for chronic kidney disease, screening.
  • Assessment of the functional state of the kidneys.
  • Predicting the risk of kidney failure.
  • Shared decision-making points of contact in the management of pathology between a nephrologist and a family physician.

Topic: "The Patient with Chronic Kidney Disease: The Pathway from Family Doctor to Nephrologist"

  • Treatment tactics and key concepts of renoprotection.
  • The role of the family doctor in slowing the progression of chronic kidney disease.
  • The route of a patient with chronic kidney disease - from a family doctor to a nephrologist.

Topic: "Renal Replacement Therapy: Options and Choice"

Date: December 11, 2024

Subtopics of the event:

  • Issues in choosing RRT modality: Effective physician-patient communication, starting from primary care and involving all members of the multidisciplinary team. 
  • Implementation of evidence-based practices in building an effective treatment pathway for patients with stage 4 and 5 CKD toward RRT – timely and individualized approaches, conducting pre-dialysis education. 
  • Stages of patient preparation and indications for starting renal replacement therapy. 
  • A detailed overview of main RRT methods: hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and kidney transplantation. 
  • Advantages and disadvantages of each RRT method. 
  • Individualized approach in selecting the optimal RRT modality and strategy. The PD-first concept. 
  • Where patients can receive RRT: National and international standards for CKD patient care.
